Dazzling in flight, the Peregrine Falcon is capable of reaching air speeds of 180 miles per hour as it plunges from tremendous heights to capture its prey. The range of the Peregrine once included the Carolinas. They were nearly wiped out by the use of pesticides that are now banned. The range of the Peregrine today is confined to extreme northern and western North America. There have been a number of successful reintroduction programs recently, including successful reintroductions in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Mount Mitchell State Park. Asheville residents have sighted Peregrines in the downtown area, where they hunt for pigeons.
